Dependencies
Biotechnology Not a map of places. Each column is one technology, and vertical position is depth in that technology’s own stack — the top is what people use, the bottom is what it is made of. A company sits in the drawing once for every technology it is placed in, so the dashed threads are the same company, seen again somewhere else.

165 placements across 6 technologies. Each column is one technology; vertical position is normalised depth in that technology's own stack, 0 at the top and 1 at the raw material. 21 of 135 companies appear in more than one technology and are drawn with an amber ring, joined by a dashed thread. The same companies are listed below the drawing.

size = how many rest on it
grey ring = sole mapped source
amber ring = in more than one technology
thread = the same company, seen again
filtered to Biotechnology · vertical axis = normalised depth · provisional data
22 of 135 companies are named in the drawing. The rest are drawn but have no room for a name where they sit — they are not missing, and they are all reachable fromStack & Company . Provisional data, generated from the same company files as the rest of the site. The companies that hold more than one technology This is the list the drawing is making a picture of. A ring on a node means the company appears again in another column; the names below say where.
How to read it Vertical position Normalised depth: 0 at the top of a stack, 1 at the raw material. Stacks have different lengths — nine layers in space technology, four in biotechnology — so raw counts cannot be compared. The fraction can. The scale is not linear: the lower third is given more height than the upper, because that is where the chains run together and where the findings are. Size How many companies rest on it, counted through the whole chain and not just the next step. Grey ring Someone’s only mapped source. A thin place, as far as the mapping goes. Amber ring and dashed thread The same company, placed in more than one technology. A thicker ring means three or more. What it does not say Nothing about price, and nothing about likelihood. A dependency map says where a chain is thin. Coverage is partial and the data is provisional, so an absence here is an absence in the mapping, not in the world.
